Earlier this year, the Boutique Homes Interior Design team started the search for a tenacious and passionate intern – an individual looking to grow and develop their career, skillset, and design acumen while learning from a team of experienced and seasoned interior designers.

We are excited to welcome our new Interior Design Intern, Sara Mourad! Her design journey begun in Italy at the University of Accademia di Belle Arti Santa Giulia in Brescia. There, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Design with a specialty focus on interior & spatial design. Coming to Australia to pursue her dream to grow and improve as a designer, Sara gathered an eclectic mix of experience from different job roles across Darwin and Melbourne. But don’t let us speak to it. Watch our short Q&A for the two of you to become better acquainted.

Through the eyes of Sara, you’ll step behind the scenes for a closer look at how we create dream homes for our customers. We’ll introduce you to our talented team members across different departments including our professionally qualified Interior Design team as they share their top tips and advice.

Every Interior Designer knows there’s no such thing as a typical day at work – from helping clients create the perfect interior vision for their home to honing an innate curiosity about the latest design trends and ideas.

We hope you enjoy following Sara’s journey as much as we love sharing it with you.

Flat Lay Inspiration

Selecting the interior design style for your home – whether it’s your first or fifth – is an exciting experience. From internal colours to the external facade, there’s plenty to consider to make sure that the colour palette of your home remains consistent and true to your personal style. To help narrow down your selections, a great place to start is to create a physical or digital moodboard. To awaken the creative in all of us, Sara has created four flat lays of some of her favourite design styles to help inspire your own colour selections.

Tropical

Hamptons

Minimalist

Contemporary Australian

What are some of your top tips for creating a digital or physical flat lay?

Sara: Try and include smaller elements that remind you of a great experience or of a special someone. Could be simple things like a touch of mint that makes you think of a specific holiday or a little decorative element that brings back happy memories. I also recommend that you play around with the shape and texture of the materials to see what works.

Do you have a favourite flat lay?

Sara: My favourite one is obviously the Tropical one. I love being surrounded by natural elements and colours as it gives me such relaxing and welcoming vibes. I also believe that nature is the biggest canvas to take inspiration from – not just because of the stunning colours but from all the beautiful shapes and textures. Wherever you place your eyes, you can find such diversity.

As a runner-up, I also really like the Contemporary Australian flat lay especially the simple geometric shapes and the different textures of the materials that add an elegant aspect to the design.  I believe that simplicity is the equivalent of elegance – simple shapes and lines help to create balance in a space.
