Removing a push plug and waste trap

So your basin or sink is partially blocked. Routine cleaning can often avoid this, and it should be your first check as a homeowner.

A push plug and waste trap is a common type of drain used in many sinks and bathtubs, and it’s important to know how to remove and replace it in case it becomes damaged or clogged. Removing a push plug and waste trap can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be a relatively straightforward process.

By following these simple steps, you can easily remove and replace a push plug and waste trap, and ensure that your sink or bathtub drains properly and remains in good working condition.

Step one

Before starting the removal process, it’s important to turn off the water supply and ensure that the sink or basin is completely dry.

Step two

The push plug is quite easy to remove on most basins – simply lift it up. For others, you’ll need to turn anti-clockwise as it’ll have a thread. With the push plug removed, you can inspect it for damage or debris and clean as needed.

Step three

The other check that you’ll need to do is your waste trap underneath your sink. Start by opening up the cupboard doors and locating the trap. Grab yourself a towel and place it underneath the trap. It’s important to capture any excess water that comes out as you’re removing the trap.

Step four

Once located, grip the two coupling nuts and turn left until loosened enough to pull the trap off completely.

Step five

Clean out any grime or dirt that you find in there.

Step six

Refit in the same manner by turning the coupling nuts to the right this time.

Step seven

Be sure to check for any leaks by turning the tap on and letting it run.

Step eight

If you notice any leaks, simply tighten the fittings.
