Finding your ideal home often comes down to weighing your heart with your head and it was no different for medical professionals and Boutique customers Renee and Bernard.
Together with their two daughters, Ava and Sienna, the busy pair spent many-a-weekend collecting inspiration from Melbourne’s display homes, always envisioning their knockdown rebuild project would end up in the hands of an architect.
That was until they found ‘The One’.
‘The moment we stepped into Boutique’s Grange we loved it! We loved the expansive entryway with high ceilings and the open plan living with separate living spaces for our family. Once we walked into the master bedroom, we knew it was for us,’ says Renee.
‘It also came down to budget. We felt it ticked most of our wants and needs and the inclusions we got for the cost just didn’t compare to a private builder for the same size home.’

How to select the perfect nest
While the knockdown rebuild took a little longer to complete than first anticipated, Renee says seeing the scaffolding come down to reveal the couple’s beautiful new Alpha façade and lush interiors made the whole journey worthwhile.
When choosing a builder, Renee says being pragmatic about how you will use the space is as important as choosing a design that makes your heart sing.

‘Visit display homes, make comparisons and know what inclusions are part of your base price, so you can consider what upgrades can be worked into your budget,’Â she says.
‘Choose a layout that not only suits your block but also suits your lifestyle and how you plan to live in your home.’
Dream designs
Similar to many customers, Bernie and Renee leaned on the Boutique online family for inspiration and support throughout their build. Just one look at their Instagram account @the.house.at.no.37 and you can see it paid dividends.
Far from a fan of clutter, Renee describes her style as minimal contemporary, with classic white, black and grey furnishings, broken up with splashes of greenery and earthy feature artworks.

‘The #ourboutiquehome social community is a wealth of knowledge. Everyone is more than happy to answer questions relating to their build or give opinions when asked,’ says Renee, who found her new Insta-friends particularly helpful when making colour selections and answering build concerns she had on the fly.
Renee’s top two tips for creating your ideal aesthetic?
- Find your inspiration: Go to display homes and scour Pinterest and Instagram before making your colour selections. Follow other people’s build journeys, particularly Boutique clients, and consistently ask questions! People are always more than happy to help.
- Consider neutral colours: Particularly in areas such as the kitchen and bathroom, which can be expensive to update later. Neutral colours are much less likely to date!
