How to create vintage elegance in modern spaces

Infusing beloved styles with a fresh, modern twist isn’t a new phenomenon in interior design. But few combine time-honoured elegance with the sophistication of contemporary quite like reinvented classicism.

‘Unlike most opulent or modern interiors, reinvented classicism is a style that remains warm, inviting and nostalgic’ says Display Designer, Nadija Saluwadana, who recently applied this aesthetic to Boutique Homes’ new Seville 28 display home. “It’s a style that works perfectly with Boutique Homes’ Tribeca façade, with its earthy palette and gridded windows combined with a dark roof and warm recycled brick.”

Below, Nadija steps you through her guide to creating a reinvented classicism style in your own home:

1. Lean into a warm colour palette

Build on a warm, neutral base of creams and beige with deep colours such as mustard and deep brown. Keep the aesthetic moody and dark by avoiding any vibrant or bright colours. ‘You can introduce one feature colour or a range of complementary hues – this is a flexible aesthetic,’ says Nadija.

‘At the Seville 28 display, I introduced olive green and burgundy-brown tones with gold accents, threading them through painted feature walls, bed heads and linens, and contemporary abstract artworks.

2. Introduce modern furnishings and plush fabrics

Create depth through plush furnishings in modern silhouettes. Think textured velvet bedheads and pill-shaped upholstery, complete with rich patterned rugs.

Including heavy dark curtains will create a moody feeling of grandeur. ‘To ensure your space is timeless, stick to contemporary furniture rather than classical pieces. That said, it’s important to achieve balance in each room,’ explains Nadija.

‘For example, in the Seville 28’s bedroom one, I’ve included a wall-to-wall gold velvet bedhead with black timber side tables with a glass top. It’s a real mix of classical and contemporary, but with an luxurious tone.’

3. Stick to an opulent finishes and materials

Incorporating traditional stone materials in glossy finishes will deliver a sense of elegance to your home. ‘Polished stone, marble and granite benchtops or coffee tables evoke a sense of history and craftsmanship,’ says Nadija.

‘Add in brushed brass accents, including taps and handles, linear pendant lights or floor lamps, to ensure a sophisticated look but with a contemporary glaze.’

4. Consider a mix of artworks and wallpapers

In keeping with the reinvented theme, artworks can be a mix of contemporary and classical. For example, introduce bold abstract artworks in your feature colours balanced with classical botanical themed prints. ‘I also love the use of wallpaper in the Boutique Homes’ Seville 28 display,’ says Nadija.

‘A first on display, the powder room features a half height wall of soft grey gloss subway tiles and floral-patterned wallpaper. I also used a shimmery pinstripe wallpaper on two walls in the theatre, which is both inviting and striking.’

5. Don’t forget to include plenty of accessories

Classicism is far from minimalist. Spaces should feel full, layered and considered. When decorating, look for pendant lighting with brass hardware, ornate mirrors, and sculptural pieces to further enhance the lavish aesthetic.
