Are you ready to bring the tranquillity of overhanging eucalypts and the soft glow of off-white blossoms into your own home? With the organic palette and bright, airy feel of the Australiana interior design style, you can feel as though you’re walking into your own country retreat, as seen at our Barcelona 32 display home with Southampton facade at the Bendigo Display Centre.
‘This style offers a calm and classy interpretation of a classic country style,’ says Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle.
‘The design is perfect for young families seeking a relaxed style that suits a regional location but without compromising on sophistication.’
Below, Mitra provides her top three tips for creating this quintessential Australian design.
1. Stick to an organic palette
Bring tones of the rolling country hills and bushland indoors. Pick a feature colour, such as a soft green, says Mitra, and offset it with accent hues of earthy browns and reds.
‘Keep your walls, tiling and carpets fairly neutral in off-whites and shades of grey,’ suggests Mitra.
‘I love the Bohemia Dorset White Gloss tiling for the kitchen splashbacks and the Downtown Grigio Matt floor-to-ceiling tiles in the master ensuite.’
Inject personality and warmth through feature walls in select rooms and pops of tan and rust in your styling, including linens, throw cushions and artworks.
2. Incorporate plenty of timber accents
For Mitra, the key to executing this style comes down to the considered use of wooden accents. And it all starts with your flooring.
‘To achieve this style, I generally opt for a darker timber for the living room floors. It’s practical and easy to maintain, especially for young families, while being the perfect canvas for the country aesthetic,’ says Mitra.
‘Consider tactile timber panelling in your entry ways or as a feature wall in your master bedroom,’ explains Mitra.
‘Your kitchen is also a fantastic space to incorporate a pop of painted timber through woodmatt cabinetry, such as Polytec’s Topiary Smooth.’

Complete the look by integrating a heavy wood oak dining table, off-white wicker chairs, and timber bedside tables.
3. Keep your styling selections simple
‘The most important tip when creating the relaxed Australiana style is not to over accessorise,’ says Mitra. ‘Don’t overthink it – keep it simple while creating focal feature points throughout the home.’
In other words, less is often more.
Natural linens, textured soft furnishings and knitted woollen throws work well to soften the Australiana style. Complement the rural energy of the space with lots of potted greenery and abstract artwork in your feature colours of green and earthy reds.
‘Paintings of native flora and fauna offer a fun way to frame the overall aesthetic,’ adds Mitra.
