There are few styles that provide a greater feeling of high-class luxury than sophisticated, contemporary interior design.

Identifiable by its moody monochromatic palette and plenty of open space, it’s a style that will stand the test of time – if you make it functional.

‘The secret is creating a sleek yet inviting aesthetic. You need to be able to see yourself and your family living in the home, while ensuring the home remains uncluttered,’ says Display Design Manager, Andrea Grover, who has executed a contemporary style at Boutique Homes Pasadena display home in Kinley, Lilydale.

Below, Andrea steps you through her top tips for creating a warm contemporary interior design in your own home:

1. Begin with a monochromatic base

The hallmark of contemporary designs is a monochromatic base, particularly through your finishes.

‘In the Pasadena’s kitchen, I chose the striking Polytec Tempest Woodgrain cabinetry and contrasted this with the opulence of the Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo in the island bench,’ says Andrea.

‘I’ve followed this Calacatta Nuvo through to the kitchen splashback to ensure visual consistency and flow within the space.’

This black, white and grey theming can be continued through the wet areas. A feeling of grandeur is created in the Pasadena’s ensuite by running Agathos Everstone grey matt tiles on both the walls and floors. This is coupled with a matt Kit Kat White Matt Mosaic tile to create contrast and interest. ‘In the powder rooms, I’ve used a Dark Grey Matt Mosaic for a more casual look,’ adds Andrea.

2. Use feature colours sparingly

Pops of colour are a great way to break up the monochromatic colour palette, lifting the room and showcasing your personality. Just make sure you don’t deviate too far from a clean, modern aesthetic.

‘Ensure you get the balance right – you don’t want to create so much visual clutter that you overpower the room with your feature colours,’ warns Andrea.

‘At the Pasadena, I incorporated a beautiful muted grey-blue through the artworks, throw cushions and accessories.’

3. Bring warmth through curves and texture

Keep your ultra-contemporary design feeling homely by inserting plenty of texture. A natural oak timber floor is the easiest way to create warmth amongst the predominantly monochromatic palette.

‘A standout at the Pasadena display is the Bora Bora Oak washed natural timber flooring,’ says Andrea.

‘You can also use oak furniture and art frames to create a sense of warmth and atmosphere in your bedrooms

At the Pasadena, textured grey Applecross Dream Dust carpets bring a sense of comfort to the upper-storey rooms and balance out the practicality of the hardwood floors to the first floor.

Consider sheer curtains to bedrooms and living areas to bring a sense of softness while supporting your privacy. Floor rugs in key living spaces such as your lounge and study bring warmth to the space without taking away from the modern aesthetic.

‘Furniture is another great way to make your home feel more homely and inviting. At the Pasadena, you can’t go past the beautiful bouclé feature sofa in the living area.’ says Andrea.

4. Keep your space minimal

Contemporary home design is all about flow and purpose, while avoiding clutter. When styling your space, stick to sculptural accessories and plenty of greenery, rather than clusters of smaller décor items such as candles.

‘For a contemporary look, steer away from flowers and instead include plenty of foliage and trees in the corners to soften the mood of the home,’ says Andrea.

‘If you are building double storey, also consider your link from downstairs to upstairs. At the Pasadena, we chose a beautiful glazed staircase that ensures openness, continuity and effortless flow through the home.’

5. Add personality through feature elements

Natural elements such as timber bring warmth to any space. For a contemporary look, stick to darker hues. At the Pasadena, black statement pieces work with some of Boutique Homes’ finest joinery upgrades, giving a high-end feel to the home.

‘One of my favourite features at the Pasadena are the architectural black steel doors, which open up and allow light to permeate through the spaces,’ says Andrea.

‘Dark open display shelving incorporated into the home’s alcoves is used to create visual interest and insert personality into the living spaces.’

6. Look for bold feature lighting

Feature pendants and chandeliers in simple forms work best in contemporary styling. Avoid fittings that lean too heavily toward an industrial look.

‘Look for bold shapes with opaque glass and black trimmings,’ suggests Andrea. ‘Feature pendants work particularly well if you have vaulted or high ceilings similar to the Pasadena.’
