1. Mix a monochromatic base with natural accent colours
Begin with a black and white palette before layering accent colours that reflect traditional country hues – think shades of brown, deep greens, and muted blues.
‘At the Montana 42, I was inspired by the way textured brick and natural materials (such as timber) can be used to break up the monochromatic palette of the façade,’ explains Mitra.
‘Use your accent colours in the same way. For example, I’ve added splashes of terracotta and navy to break up the porcelain floor tiles and black cabinetry in the wet areas. These hero colours are also incorporated throughout the soft furnishings, bedding, and accent pieces.’
2. Prioritise natural materials and textures
Natural materials are the backbone of the American farmhouse style. Timber flooring is a must-have, with the parquetry herringbone flooring a standout feature as soon as you walk into the Montana 42 display home.
‘A great design tip is to complement the flooring with VJ timber cladding in smaller areas such as your hallway. At the Montana, I also love how we’ve enhanced the patterned stone hearth in the living area by adding a textured Venetian plaster wall as a backdrop,’ says Mitra.
‘You can also incorporate timber accents through your overhead cabinetry in the kitchen and butler’s pantry – think warm Woodmatt finishes such as Notaio Walnut.”

To complete the country inspired look, introduce unrefined timber and fabric furniture along with grey woven carpets in the bedrooms.
‘As with all interior design, don’t forget to add warmth by incorporating plenty of greenery and natural foliage,’ adds Mitra.
3. Incorporate black metal and industrial pieces
An industrial glaze is given to this interior through pops of black metal in the fixtures and fittings. Oversized black metal pendants in your dining space are a great example, offering a dramatic feature sure to turn heads. Complement this look with black tapware, black-trimmed windows, and dark timber furniture.
‘The select use of decorative mirrors for a modern sense of light and surface can also be really effective,’ says Mitra.
‘Finish the interiors with black and white or sepia-toned vintage artworks, and use feature wall lights to emphasise and highlight these pieces.’
