As a Melbourne inner-city dweller for many years, Boutique Homes customer Fiona decided it was time to sell her 1-bedroom apartment in favour of moving to the country where she could enjoy some quiet and more living space.
Now living in Bacchus Marsh, Fiona’s Marseille 28 has a master bedroom to rival the size of her entire last apartment and she enjoys the peace and quiet that has made way for overall inner peace.

Even with a move to the county, Fiona has kept her lifestyle and maintained practicality by selecting a home and location that supports her daily life, saying the experience has worked out beautifully.
‘I like the city but have always wanted to live in the country. I wanted to live in the heart of the country, but I had to be practical, so I’ve also serviced my needs and now I love where I am!’ she says.
For Fiona, it began with a drive to a small land sales office where she hastily purchased a block of land. Soon after she was faced with varying mixed thoughts that wavered between ‘what have I done?’ and ‘what am I going to put on this?’
But while in the land sales office, she found a copy of the Boutique Homes brochure that captured her attention.
‘I had no idea Boutique existed,’ she says. ‘I saw the brochure and thought ‘that looks nice!’ and took the giant chunky brochure home.’
From there, it was a series of walking through display homes, getting a clearer idea of what she wanted each time she walked through.
‘Thank goodness for display homes – looking at a floorplan, I had no idea! But walking through, you get a feeling of how it works whether it’s too complicated or hidden or dark.’
‘Every time I went through my mind kept telling me ‘yes’ and the staff were very patient with me. I visited the Point Cook display home 33 times. I kept a tally – it’s a wonder they didn’t ask me to leave!’
Finding the home design for her, Fiona described the Marseille as having a lovely inner-spine that everything peels off, making it easy to get around.
‘I walked through the Marseille, and I just knew it was ‘The One.’ I liked this home, and I knew it. As you get older you tend to trust your instincts more and so that’s what I did.’
Surprised with what she could get standard with Boutique, Fiona also had a clear idea about what she wanted and was appreciative of the flexibility.
‘I did like the fact that I looked at the basic home design and I could choose different design options. I built the three-bedroom option, mainly because it’s just me so I didn’t need the four bedrooms.’

‘A lot of things I stuck to the standard category which was good, but where I thought there was value, I added it and it was not half as expensive as I thought it would be!’
Reflecting on her experience as a single home builder, Fiona recalled having no idea if she could build with her own single income.
‘It was a challenge, but I was lucky. I previously owned a small apartment, but I also knew how to budget.’
Fiona says that as a single person home building can be terrifying because you question whether you’re doing it right, but it’s not a horrific journey.
‘I was able to talk freely about what I needed and what I expected. A lot of single people don’t often think of building, but we can do it!’
‘I’m a single woman – and quite happy about that – but single people in general, not everyone is going to have a family. We’re not all families with kids and I know it’s ideal – a nuclear family, but I think there is a big market for singles.’
‘Trust yourself’ she adds. ‘You can build whatever you like. Also, everything is yours, and that is fantastic!’
