Are you one of the many Melbournians looking to ditch inner-city living for the relaxed lifestyle of the country? Or perhaps you just don’t want to wait for your next vacation to enjoy the luxuries of a pool-side hotel?
Then a classic country-coastal interior design may be for you.
‘This style offers a beautiful, elegant alternative to coastal or Hamptons interiors for those families looking for a tree-change,’ says Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle, who used this design as the basis for the Riviera 32 display home in Coridale Estate, Lara.
‘The mix of natural finishes combined with modern elements makes for a calm, homely atmosphere that will stand the test of time.’
Below, Mitra shares her top three tips for recreating this style in your own home.
1. Begin with a natural and earthy colour palette
Matching the scenic surrounds of a country retreat with a calm and neutral colour palette is the best base for this design style.
‘Natural timber floors and the considered use of timber cabinetry work perfectly in any country-style home,’ says Mitra. ‘At the Coridale display home, I chose a darker Typhoon Riviera Saint Tropez flooring and Polytec’s Boston Oak Woodmatt cabinetry in the kitchen.’
Opt for a more natural colour palette for most of your hard surfaces – think clay and terracotta, coupled with shades of grey. ‘Feel free to introduce a feature colour but keep it moody and soft to avoid overpowering the space,’ suggests Mitra. ‘Soft eucalypts and blues – such as Polytec’s Agave in the kitchen – are wonderful choices.’

2. Introduce tactile furniture
When it comes to styling, look for natural textures that create an air of comfort. Stick to timber for the majority of your furniture, complemented by rattan pendants or framed mirrors to add dimension. ‘Plantation shutters, timber blinds and natural sheers are the go-to window furnishings to make your home feel like a country resort,’ suggests Mitra. ‘Consider a feature piece of furniture, such as a large country-style dining set, and enhance the entire look with plenty of potted greenery.’
3. Add modern elements
Offset your country-coastal styling by giving your home a modern edge. ‘A more contemporary mood can be created through the considered use of bamboo and darker linen bedding and upholstery,’ says Mitra.
You’ll also find brushed nickel fixtures and fittings throughout the home, bringing a modern element to each room.

‘I’ve also featured horizontal joint VJ cladding in the master bedroom, laundry and kitchen to keep the influence of country-coastal living imminent throughout the home.’
