How to create a sophisticated Soho-inspired townhouse

Manhattan’s stylish Soho neighbourhood is known worldwide for its eclectic mix of art galleries, fashion boutiques and restaurants with the design aesthetic extending into the apartments within the district.

‘The Soho style works particularly well in the smaller footprint of a townhouse. It allows you to create a high-end apartment vibe while keeping all the functionality of a standalone home.’

Benefits of townhouse living

Townhouses perfectly balance space and function. By sharing a wall with the adjoining property, these multi-storey homes offer a smaller footprint and greater affordability than established properties.

But affordability doesn’t mean you skimp on quality. You’ll still receive all the same finishes and warranties as a standalone home, in estates close to amenities, schools and parklands.

1. Stick to a mute colour base

A Soho interior begins with a monochromatic palette. Stick to a core colour scheme of whites, greys and charcoals. At the Somers 21 townhouse display, Nadija chose the Minimal colour scheme from Boutique Homes’ three pre-curated colour palettes.

‘This modern and dynamic palette was the perfect fit for inner-city townhouse living. I love the fresh concrete benchtops and dimension created by the white Kit Kat splashback tiles,’ says Nadija.

‘To bring warmth to the space, I upgraded the timber laminate flooring to the Artasan Typhoon 130 cream. This works well with the timber-look overhead cabinetry in the kitchen.’

Make sure the majority of your furniture follows this monochromatic theme. Marble side tables, textured boucle arm and dining chairs, and sleek grey sofas work well. ‘Include black trimmings and a couple of charcoal feature pieces. Think black metal light fittings, black trimmed mirrors, and a dark timber coffee table,’ adds Nadija.

2. Add in deep feature colours

Brighten your spaces with one to two feature colours. Just don’t overdo it – too many dark colours will make your rooms feel smaller.

‘At the Somers 21 display, I threaded navy and mustard through feature furniture pieces, bedroom linens and fun prints,’ says Nadija.

3. Include brass accents

Bring richness into your spaces by incorporating gold-like accents. You can upgrade Boutique Homes’ Minimal colour scheme to include brushed brass tapware.

‘The Somers 21 is the first townhouse display featuring our brass tapware range,’ says Nadija.

‘You can also introduce brass in your decorative lighting – a brass table lamp is a unique feature in any living space. Or create a little reading nook in your study or bedroom with a brass floor lamp.’

4. Choose furniture that makes your spaces feel larger

To help keep your townhouse feeling light, bright and spacious, pay attention to your furniture selections. Look for sculptural and pill-shaped contemporary pieces – nothing too square or heavy. You want to create an illusion of space by keeping your chairs, lounge and tables lightweight.

‘Look for pieces with legs that hover off the ground and show space and light underneath. This is particularly important for your larger furniture pieces, such as your sofa,’ says Nadija.

‘Glass top tables and materials with meshing or little cut outs will give your spaces room to breathe and make them feel larger.’

Mirrors placed on the wall opposite a window will also make your townhouse feel more spacious.

5. Keep your interior youthful by incorporating pattern

While the Soho style is contemporary, it doesn’t mean your homes needs to feel cold. Use pattern to create a sense of youthfulness and fun in your rooms, suggests Nadija.

‘Pattern can be used in your artworks, but also in your throw cushions or a feature wall in your bedroom,’ she suggests. ‘Look for contemporary, geometric designs to help match the contemporary feel of your interiors.’
